I just received a list of what the Superintendent, Curriculum Specialist, and Teachers are making at our schools, straight from the Superintendent. I know a teacher in Hartford Public Schools, with 10 years under her belt, who is making $60K. As I've said before, she deals with issues that teachers in Hebron don't have to worry about. Language issues, extreme poverty, drug abuse in parents, etc. Same with teachers I know in Windham. Prep time doesn't approach what they see in Hebron. Parental involvement either. Para assistance ditto. I have seen paras working for hours with the more "difficult" students at Gilead Hill. I have personally never seen a classroom teacher do this. So you tell me that teachers in Hebron aren't getting paid enough? I am just including the first 10 teachers, because I can't seem to get the list to copy and paste. Altogether there are 18 making in excess of $75K, not including specialists.

Superintendent’s salary: 2009-2010 $131,250

2010-2011 none decided yet

Director of Curriculum and Technology: 2009- 2010 $94,844

2010-2011 $98,401

Katherine Anderson 47,693
Janis Andrews 75,691
Eileen Baukus 75,691
Susan Bottaro 80,125
Tracey Brown 71,446
Althea Carr 75,271
Liz Chrostowsky 76,111
Sarah Costa 57,260
Cynthia Daniels 75,631
Stephanie DeLucia 64,602

Don't forget that the salaries listed for most of the individuals is for a 180 day school year. The salaries listed would be good salaries for a 50 week/year job which is 250 days. Divide by .72 to see the salary on a full year rate basis..

Yes, thank you for making that point. So here are the salaries for the classroom teachers, taking into account that they have the summer months, and all school vacations, off:

Katherine Anderson 66,240
Janice Andrews 105,126
Eileen Baukus 105,126
Susan Bottaro 111,284
Tracey Brown 99,230
Althea Carr 104,543
Liz Chrostowsky 105,709
Sarah Costa 81.800
Cynthia Daniels 105,043
Stephanie DeLucia 89,725

As someone with an MA, who is curently making $25K per year working 40 hours per week, with no summer off and no school vacations, I would feel like I'd died and gone to heaven if I were in any one of these people's shoes. We're not talking about a private corporation here. We're talking about money that is coming directly from taxpayers' pockets. And many of those taxpayers simply cannot afford to take the hit.

Just wanted to add one point...for all of the criticism being directed at the superintendent, when you look at her salary compared to some of the "adjusted" ones, she is not making all that much more. Think of all the time she puts in compared to a classroom teacher--she has been answering queries throughout this vacation, she attends numerous meetings that the teachers don't attend. I believe she works, at least periodically, throughout the summer. She makes decisions re snow closures in the wee small hours of the morning. And her responsibility level doesn't even compare to that of a kindergarten teacher, for example. So, compared to the pay scale that we see for our teachers, is her salary really out of line? At least she's got an MA, and is presumably working toward a PhD. Are our teachers required to have MA's?

Just noticed this new thread. I posted the attachments on an external site and wrote the comment on the topic: LINK to 2010/2011 BOE budget. I have repeated the posting here.

I found an old posting by Paul Revere under the Disturbing thread on this board. He had a link to free hosting of pdf files. I did not sign up for an account .. using the FREE 7 day option and uploaded all 4 documents sent to me. Once you open the PDF files - you can save them to your computers. You ONLY have the next 7 days for access. These are the steps for downloading the file:
(1) Once you click on the link(s) below -- a page will display and you will need to click DOWNLOAD
(2) Next screen appears. Enter the code in the box and click on download now (below entry box) -- file should open

So the curriculum specialist description was just written in '08, which I guess means that she was hired in '08? Shouldn't the supt., the principal, and the asst. principal be able to do all of the duties listed in the curriculum specialist job description?

I was surfing the 'net looking for statistics regarding teacher salaries in other states. Looks like CT is one of the higher-paid states. I found this comment from a poster on one of those sites. I didn't write this, but it makes a lot of sense to me:

"I'm tired of listening to teachers complain too. Any way you slice it, its a job. Teachers on Long Island have it easy. They work 180 days a year, full non-contributory pensions (or perhaps that contribute mintuely) and they work maybe a 6 hour day. Its a job that has been abused. They can't get fired after their ridiculous 3 year tenure and they always get some kind of a raise. The rest of the population, has to work each day as if it were there first, or they can be removed in seconds from there jobs. The vast majority of Americans haven't recieved any kind of a raise and their salaries are going down. They work all year round and many are working 14 hour days, for the same salary. Believe it or not, teachers aren't the only ones out there that have a masters, and although my masters was partially paid for by my company. Yours has been or will be paid for over and over again since you recieve pay raises everytime you take 15 credits, or so. In case your not a math teacher thats far more lucrative. Teachers view the rest of the world with bias too. They see people on wall street making hundreds of thousands of dollars and they are right. However, find out how much time in put in to make that kind of money. And the second the market crashes or the economy tanks, we still have to work those crazy hours (80-100 hrs a week, 52 weeks a year) and now you are just scraping by and hoping to keep your job. Remember we don't have a union/contract that stipulates that even if you/ or your department is notprofitable you can keep your job. If your a good teacher you should be paid well. If your a great teacher you should be paid even better. If you stink you should be dumped out on the street like the rest of society. If the economy is poor as it is now, none of the teachers should be getting raises, like the rest of society. It shouldn't come down to eliminating positions because the teachers who are safe, due to tenure, don't want to compromise on their salaries or benefits. It should never come down to students losing out because teachers have such a sense of entitlement. This is disgusting and the reason why so many people on Long Island take issue with this subject. I know many people making less money, working more hours and under more stress than ever before and just happy to have a job. But not the tenured teachers of long island. They are sitting pretty and don't like it when we, the taxpayers, want they to do a little more for their salary. Too bad, if you have to attend an extra seminar. Too bad if you have to start paying a little more into your pension. Welcome to Reality!!!!!!! And by the way I am the daughter of a teacher. And my mother agrees that too many people have taken advantage of the system. It's broken and needs fixing."
