Hebron Dollars & Sense

When will this China nonsense ever stop? Can anyone tell me the benefits of having sent teachers and administrators there while the schools had to have subs to fill in? What is the long-range plan for this?

Now I have studied Eastern Philosophy and history, and I know that the Chinese government looks at this as a great PR opportunity - they will not show the visitors the "true" China.

Wouldn't it be much cheaper to hire someone to come and teach Chinese langauage and/or culture or have a "visiting" teacher from China stay with a host family for a year? Other districts (like New Canaan) have done this.

You mean you don't trust the Chinese government either?

Who do you trust - your local gov't, state, federal, or foreign? Answer should be "None of the above!"

I don't know if it would be cheaper to add Chinese to the curriculum - we don't pay substitute teachers that much. I'd be willing to bet that's where Mrs. Cruz would like this to end - all on the taxpayer's dime.

Perhaps a whole bunch of the public should attend this information meeting and ask these questions. Ask for an accounting of the true cost of the Chinese excursions - not what has been paid by the individual teachers for their own souveniers, etc., but if Hebron is reimbursed from the grant money for the substitute teachers, etc. And ask if the grant money comes from state taxpayer funds, or other sources? If this issue is brought up at a HBOE meeting, it would be videotaped, and I wonder if the answers would be any different - or would the Super be bold enough to flat out lie on camera.

This thread is making me want to go out for Chinese food - Hebron's local Chinese restaurant is rather yummy!

Don't they watch/read the news. There is an outbreak of POLIO in some of the smaller provinces in China. Apparently introduced by a foreign traveler

I also wonder if the "administrators" get a discount when 8+ people make the trip as a "group". WHY the big push to recruit anyone/everyone to make the trip??
