Also found the Hebron foundation information so "unspecific". I have already contributed to Marlborough's foundation and will do so again. Marlborough has a "PLAN" -- everything is in place; Hebron rambles on without real information; everything with Hebron is so, so vague. When will they learn we need detailed information: what grants, who is on the board of directors, what will they do with the funds (aside from supplementing what they pull from our tax dollars).
Be careful when voting in new BOE members ... study their profiles, philosophies and strength of character. We do not want parents who drive their kids to school and ignore the buses (paid public transportation in the budget). We also do not want parents who will state one thing publicly and then go with the opinions of the "alpha" personality on the board. We also do not want any "super volunteer" i.e. someone who volunteers with several groups in town because they will not have the time/energy to focus on "education" issues.
Our BOE members should be able to research any and all issue introduced by the superintendent and have the courage and backbone to challenge issues NOT supported by facts and data. The BOE members need to remember that the funds supporting the school budget are used primarily for salaries and NOT in the classroom. Lets eliminate all "rubber stampers".
I generally agree with what you are posting, but I have a problem with the concept of schools having to beg for materials. If the materials are truly needed, they can be justified, and should be included in the town's education budget. If the taxpayers agree with the justification, they will support it.
How is the education foundation any different from a PTA?
As for new BOE members, how do you propose that folks "study their profiles, philosophies and strength of character"? There is almost never any public information about, nor even interviews from, potential candidates. Does it matter only whether or not the candidate stands and waves with a sign at the intersection of routes 85 and 66 in the days before election? If they are good looking, dress well, or are reasonably healthy looking, then vote for them? Does it matter that they attend the right church? Last I checked, most folks in town do not attend religious services regularly. Don't rule someone out purely because they don't go to church - they might still be of strong character.
Someone with a history of volunteering may or may not make a better candidate than someone who hasn't. I get your point about hoping the candidate is not spreading themselves too thin, perhaps only running for a resume position.
As for parents who drive their kids to school - I don't have a problem with that at all. Parents have to determine what is best for their kids, and their own situation. Often it means there are 2 parents working, and if one drives their kid to school it is done so they can both get to work, or have a few more minutes to spend with their child. It doesn't always mean they are ungrateful for or disrespecting the available public transportation. Since some of the bus rides are so long, it often means they and their children get an extra half hour of needed sleep!
