Hebron Dollars & Sense

The town voters have been asking for more clarity in the Hebron elementary school budgets. I located one CT school budget that is an excellent example of "how" clarity can be achieved - I am sure there are others. This example is detailed and contains notations near budget line items, explanations of revenues, definitions of certified and non-certified salaries, definitions of services provided and teacher student ratios in the classrooms etc., etc.

If the HBOE budget was as detailed, the approval processed would be streamlined since just about anything that impacts on the budget is EXPLAINED and easily found. These following pages are excellent examples of the details the public would like to view: pages 11-16, pages17-19, page 40. Last year, the last column on the HBOE budget given to the public was not filled in. Anyone interested in the percent increase or decrease had to fill in that column by hand.

We would applaud any efforts to have even HALF this detail in our HBOE budget. I encourage all of you to read through some of these budget pages. This detailed format will impress all of you.

That's The Way They Operate & Unless You Dump The $ordid Lot Of Them When Their Terms/Contracts Are Up, They Ain't Gonna Change Their Stripes

The ONLY WAY To Get Their Attention For Real Is To BIFIRCATE THE HBOE Budget

I still believe the majority of taxpayers in town will support reasonable budget requests, especially as many of are well educated, and we value education as the best investment we can make for our society.

We want to know what they are asking for, why, and what alternatives were considered.

The BOE earned themselves a lot of mistrust last year, especially by withholding critical information - taxpayers were asked to vote on a budget without knowing what the BOE intended to cut from what it proposed, and worse, how much they intended to "restore" from leftover surplusses that they clearly should have known and disclosed.

They need to be open to providing all the details before they will regain the community trust.

And they definitely need to think twice before mentioning ADK again...
