Hebron Dollars & Sense

They taped last nights meeting and will be posting on the school web site - 3 hours long. They are going to approach the RHAM technology dept about taping their meetings for TV in the future.

New "backpack" program with Hebron Interfaith to send home food for the weekend for families that receive free and reduced lunch. At this time approx 40 families qualify. Should be up and running in October.

They developed a process and handbook to identify gifted and challenge/enrichment students at both GHS and HES. The special ed director will be rolling it out at the PTA meeting Monday, Oct 4, at 7pm at GHS. Heidi, new enthusiastic PTA president, working to have speakers at all five PTA meetings. SRBI (Scientific Research Based Intervention) may be explained at a PTA meeting. Ms Tenza still working on explanation and roll out of program to parents. Happens 3 times a year to our children.

They have 5 new staff to service the two behavioral students they have brought back to the district. Going very well. Have named the program GOAL (Goal Oriented Adaptive Learning) They are ready to move forward with tuitioning in behavioral students from surrounding communities to make this program a money maker. No data presented to show how this will impact community or non behavioral students.

With money from a state entitlement (not sure of total) they are adding back in janitorial hours through 2 (currently) part time staff. Paying off $19,000 of unanticipated expenses incurred by a) the new behavioral program GOAL and b) tuition shortfall for students now attending magnet schools. Ms Cruz recommendation was to bank the rest of the funds for future use. Mr Allaban encouraged Ms Cruz to spend more of it as a reward for how hard they have worked at conserving dollars.

Information regarding Blue Ribbon School celebration will be forthcoming.

Sounds like they are off to a "better" start ...let hope it continues. Maybe someone did read my e-mail last week -- maybe it did made an impact. The video-taping is definitely a step in the right direction. It certainly will curtail the inappropriate behavior at their meetings and cut out the "bullying" factor. Perhaps the chair received the message too and will run the meetings with a rule book in hand.

Your posting gives a glimmer of hope - sounds like they are making an effort to give better explanations and to keep the community informed. Hope this is what we are to expect for the remainder of the year and they do not revert to their prior behavior.

What was the excess? In fairness, that amount should be "removed" from the new budget request. We need to check the budget thoroughly and remove anything that appears to be "padding".
