This budget vote isn't just about ADK. Parents and community members are also concerned about filling vacated administrative positions in an economic climate that portends a short fall of 1 million dollars in the Hebron school budget next year. What kind of advanced planning is that? If we don't get it right this year we will lose valuable curriculum and class size will go up next year. Those things may happen anyway, but one would think the HBOE would be anxious to give the appearance of at least listening to its constituency.

As evidenced by the vote yesterday, it is not a "vocal minority" concerned about preventing astronomical tax increases and maintaining quality education. The HBOE members are a savvy, talented group that needs to come together and instruct their very able administrators to work toward a compromise with the community. BOF sent this budget package to a vote as requested by the HBOE. Now is the time for the HBOE to admit they do not function in a vacuum no matter what the Charter says. We are here to support them in the goal of compromise.

Tomorrow evening the BOF will have a special meeting at 6:30 in the Douglas Library community room, the agenda includes

1. Review and discuss the Exit Poll results, and
2. Consider and recommend FY 2010-2011 Budget for referendum to be held on May 18th.


The BOS doesn't meet until 7:30 at the town offices for their regularly scheduled meeting. It would be easier if both meetings were held in the same building.

I understand that the HBOE isn't scheduled to meet until Thursday 5/13. Are we going to get caught up with issues of authority - I thought the BOS had directed, and therefore was responsible for, the exit poll. Why does the BOF get to review the results in their meeting, before they are made public by the BOS? Given the actions of the BOE so far and their attitude toward other boards, they might not be inclined to accept the exit poll results if they aren't delivered properly.

As for the HBOE itself, from what I know of Kathy Shea, while she must feel vindicated by the poll results, I don't think she is the type of person to say "I TOLD YOU SO!" - but if I were in her shoes, I'm sure I'd be thinking it.

I have sat hear and listened to what has been said about the HBOE but we elected the yet no one is happy with what the are trying to do in town. They are doing what is in the best intrested of the young students in town. You are expecting them to cut so much. I don't think any of you realize what this means for education in our town. If you cut programs that are there to allow children to excel in
areas of education you are stunting development. Education is essential to a success in life. If we cut all of these programs that draw young families to our town ( education and many of the things that make Hebron great), the value of the town will decrese and no one will want to buy a house here. There are the dollars and sense you will be upset with in the end.
